Salah satu kendala utama pengembangan budidaya intensif adalah akumulasi nitrogen anorganik beracun yang harus dijaga sangat rendah dengan pertukaran air yang sering atau daur ulang air melalui biofilter. Studi ini menjelaskan metode lain untuk menghilangkan nitrogen anorganik menggunakan populasi bakteri heterotrofik yang ditambah dengan penambahan zat karbon, molase, untuk meningkatkan rasio umpan C:N di bawah kondisi laboratorium. Tujuan utama studi laboratorium adalah untuk mengetahui korelasi tingkat rasio C:N dengan kadar amonia, nitrit, oksigen terlarut, pH dan pertumbuhan udang dalam budidaya udang Penaeus monodon dengan Zero Water Exchange Model (ZWEM) menggunakan molase sebagai sumber karbon. Ditemukan bahwa penambahan tetes tebu pada tambak udang dengan ZWEM berperan dalam menghilangkan amonia dan nitrit. Selain itu, pemberian molase pada tangki laboratorium meningkatkan pertumbuhan dan persentase pertambahan berat udang serta meningkatkan populasi bakteri heterotrof. Avnimelecch, 1999 melaporkan bahwa pertumbuhan ikan di kolam yang diberi perlakuan dengan rasio C : N =16,6 : 1 secara signifikan lebih tinggi daripada ikan yang dibudidayakan di kolam yang diberi perlakuan dengan rasio C : N 11,1 : 1. Juga McIntonsh (2000) telah menumbuhkan udang putih berhasil di tambak dengan zero water exchange nodel usibg grain-based petelet ( 18 % protein) dengan rasio C : N 20,0 : 1.
